Music and Arts - School

John Paul II Children's Choir perform at the Memorial Auditorium, in celebration of the Sisters of Mercy 150th Anniversary Gala, November 2007.

Parish and parish school leadership are dedicated to offering the finest musical arts curriculum of any school in the Sacramento region, a commitment rooted in the very origins of the parish.

The current music program directly descends from the musical heritage left to the parish community by "music Sisters" of the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who staffed All Hallows Parish School from its founding in 1948 to their departure in 1989.  Sister Mary Ann Irene, B.V.M. and Sister Mary Romaine, B.V.M. each were musical stars in their own right, and shared their love of music with generations of their students.  Indeed, many current All Hallows musicians studied under them.  In 2007, the BVM Congregation made a generous gift to the Community in sponsorship of an organ pipe.  [To "sponsor a pipe", inquire here.]

Ms. Kim LaSavio,  parish organist and accomplished violist, is the parish school's Director of Chorale Studies (all grades).  Mrs. Maria Berenice-Hoyos, Spanish-language parish music director and accomplished cellist, is Director of String Studies (all grades), and leads the new youth string orchestra.  As part of the music curriculum, semi-private violin and cello lessons are offered to all parish school students.   (Ms. LaSavio and Ms. Hoyos also perform in the Orchestra of the Academy at All Hallows.)

Music is an integral part of the school curriculum.  John Paul II students are featured performers at All Hallows Concerts.  They are taught sacred music forms, both traditional (Latin) and contemporary, thereby experiencing the full richness of the Church's musical history.  They attend all scheduled Orchestra matinee performances and receive advance instruction in each piece presented.

In addition to full playing roles in the All Hallows Orchestra, Orchestra members also present at special school events, including First Communion, Confirmation, Graduation, and the annual student Christmas Show.

John Paul II School, as part of its Student Music Scholar Program, also offers individual music lessons in piano (Mrs. Freda Ravizza).
